Why Skincare Matters
Everyone has a different skin type! You should learn what type of skin you have and what works best for you. Don’t compare your skin journey to anyone else because yours is unique to what your skin needs.
What's the point of skincare?
Having a good skincare routine helps your skin stay in good condition. Throughout the day, you are shedding skin cells. It’s important to keep your skin glowing and in a healthy condition. An effective routine can help prevent acne, treat wrinkles and help your skin be the best and healthiest version it can be.
As you age your skin’s cells turn over and slow down, which can make your skin appear duller and less radiant. Using quality skincare, can help remove dead skin cells. Your body will then start to replace them with newer, more youthful cells. You may have heard the expression “preventing skin problems is easier and less costly than trying to fix them in the future,” and this is true! When your skin looks better, you look good and you’ll feel better about yourself and have more self-confidence.
Building a routine
Let's jump into what a good and effective skincare routine should look like! Most routines depending on your skin type should have these components…
- Cleanser
- Toner
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen
- Exfoliator
- Serum
- Hydrating face mask
Let’s break all these down so we can understand why each one of these are important and key to healthy skin.
Cleanser
With cleanser you should wash your face gently with warm water, and a product designed for your face. If you have dry skin, you’ll want to choose a cleanser that doesn’t have alcohol, and is gentle. If you have oily skin, you'll want to look for an oil-free cleanser. Afterward, rinse with cool water, to close the pores. If you are wearing makeup, makeup wipes will help remove makeup, but double cleansing with a rosehip facial cleanser, or face balm is best. This breaks up all the makeup, and then cleanses with a gentle cleanser to remove excess makeup and build-up from things you may have encountered during the day.
Toner
Toners are used after washing your face to help smooth and calm skin while restoring nutrients.
Serums
Vitamin C is great but should only be used in the AM, while retinol should only be used at night. Hyaluronic acid is another great serum to help hydrate the skin, and can be used both day and night.
Moisturizer
To finish off your routine for morning and evening you should moisturize. Moisturizer day cream should be used every time you wash your face, even if you have oily skin. If you have this type of skin, choose an oil-free or gel product. For more sensitive skin, you might want to try a water-based moisturizer.
Exfoliator
Exfoliating is great for all skin types and is important for keeping skin glowing and fresh. It helps remove the dead skin cells.
How often you exfoliate is going to be determined by your skin type. For example, dry skin you may exfoliate once a week, or even once every other week. More oily skin types will want to exfoliate a few times a week. For best results, exfoliate after you cleanse and then follow with your anti-aging serum and moisturizer day cream to lock in all the products and hydration!
SPF
A lot of people miss this next one, but you should always use sunscreen on your face. Even if it’s a cloudy day, rainy day, snowy day, sunny day, you're staying inside, wearing sunscreen is a must. You're protecting your skin from UV light, radicals, aging, and sun spots. Choose one that provides broad-spectrum protection and has an SPF of at least 30. Makeup products will have SPF sometimes, but it's really not going to protect you unless its SPF 30 or higher!
Finding the right routine
There are plenty of skincare brands to choose from. But finding one that is really right for you and your skin is important. Look for products that have benefits of high quality and natural ingredients to provide the nutrients for healthy, glowing, youthful skin.
Because we get most of our vitamin intake from foods, quality ingredients should have the benefits that healthy food provides for your body. The products you use should protect you from environmental damage and pollution. You will want them to help fight the effects of aging, such as wrinkle lines and sunspots. Quality skin care products are more refined, with fewer bacteria and impurities.
Your skincare is an investment
You should be investing in your skin, and never feel guilty about that. So if that means spending more money to have good quality products to get great results then you should. Spending money on a repetitive skincare routine that doesn't work for your skin is a waste of your money.
Having a great skincare routine that works for you will not only provide you with healthy, radiant skin but it will boost your self esteem… Remember no matter your skin type, we are all beautiful and we should be confident in our own skin.
